2048: what to know before playing

Take a moment with 2048 before moving to another game. Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Look at what changes after your first action. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Try a more deliberate round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Understand the aim

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Keep the controls in easy reach.

The playing sequence

  1. Move the board using an arrow key, swipe, or a direction button.
  2. Equal adjacent tiles combine once per move; their new value is added to your score.
  3. Keep an empty lane where possible. Undo reverses the most recent move.
  4. Use New round to begin with two tiles.

Keyboard and screen controls

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

Try this example

Moving [2, 2, 2, 2] left produces [4, 4, 0, 0], not [8, 0, 0, 0]. Each tile merges at most once in that move. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

A common point of confusion

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
